There's something about Santa Monica that feels quintessentially American. It's the perfect blend of SoCal charm, beach town relaxation, and city excitement. It's no wonder why this sun-soaked destination is my top pick for a Memorial Day Weekend getaway. From its iconic pier to its vibrant downtown scene, Santa Monica offers a wealth of activities that make it an ideal spot to commemorate and celebrate this important holiday.
Day 1: Arrival and Exploring
After landing at the Los Angeles International Airport, I made my way to Santa Monica. My first stop was the iconic Santa Monica Pier. Riding the ferris wheel gave me a stunning view of the Pacific Ocean and the city. Afterwards, I spent some time at the Santa Monica Beach, lounging on the sand and taking a dip in the cool sea.
For dinner, I headed to Cassia, a renowned Southeast Asian brasserie. The Clay Oven Bread with Three Dips was a revelation, and the Pot Au Pho was comforting and flavorful.
Day 2: Memorial Day Remembrance and Celebration
A key part of my trip was attending a Memorial Day ceremony. Santa Monica hosts an annual Memorial Day Observance at Woodlawn Cemetery, Mausoleum and Mortuary. The powerful ceremony was a touching tribute to those who've sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
Afterwards, I explored the Third Street Promenade, a vibrant pedestrian street filled with shops, street performers, and delicious eateries. I had lunch at The Misfit Restaurant + Bar, where I indulged in their famous shrimp roll and a refreshing cocktail.
In the evening, I enjoyed a mesmerizing sunset at Palisades Park, the perfect end to a reflective and joyful day.
Day 3: Hiking and Goodbye
On my last day, I ventured inland to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. I hiked the popular Sandstone Peak Trail, which offered breathtaking views of the ocean and city.
On my way back to the city, I stopped by Malibu Country Mart for some shopping and a quick bite at Malibu Kitchen, where I had the best New York-style bagel outside of NYC.
